About the Event:

This professional development seminar focuses on home visits, an evidence-based strategy, that is extremely relevant during this pandemic with the challenges that families and educators are facing. Now that most students’ classrooms have shifted to their homes, structured home visits provide school staff a more accurate means to identify educational assets in students’ homes to as well as a strategy to be responsive to learning impediments. The educational opportunities created by home visits will bridge the physical distances due to remote instruction and build the capacity of students’ families to more effectively support students’ steady learning growth. Participants will expand their capacity to partner effectively with a diversity of families in schools to support students’ developmental and academic growth.

Facilitators include:

  • Mr. Fernando Flores-Cardenas is a bilingual teacher in San Francisco. Fernando is a veteran bilingual teacher having taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels for 16 years. He recently completed graduate level course work at California State University San Francisco and earned his Administrative Credential and Master’s Degree in Education. Fernando moved deeper into engaging families in the educational process through virtual home visits during school closures last semester.

  • Dr. Raymond Isola has been a bilingual educator for over 35 years in California from the preschool to the university levels. He was a school principal for 20 years. His most recent tenure as principal was for 13 years at Sanchez Elementary School in San Francisco’s Mission District. At Sanchez School, a school-wide approach to home visits was successfully implemented with positive outcomes for students, family members and staff members.
